What are Tonks like?

What is the Tonkinese?

The Tonkinese is not a hybrid or cross-breed, in fact the Tonkinese pre-dates the Burmese and was first recognised as an individual breed (the Chocolate) way back in the late 1880's. It was revived as a breed in the 1960's.

Tonks are magical.

From the moment that they are born, they are little people, not "cats" at all.

They are highly intelligent and more "human" than many humans!

As they grow, they honour us with their complete trust.

In return they give us their unconditional love.

The Tonkinese is social . They actually need company, preferably of their own kind, and of humans.

They thrive on physical, interactive play, mental stimulation and companionship, whether playing crazy games  or simply snoozing.

They will greet and enjoy your visitors and try to make sure no-one feels left out!

Tonks naturally make "Tonkpiles"!

If their Forever Home has other felines or dogs, they will do their best to teach them the habit too.

They are likely to "pile" up onto you in bed or chair as well, and woe betide a Slave who then wants to get up!

Each Kitten is a very individual little person, unbelievably keen to learn about their huge new world.

The Tonk is so inquisitive.

But the self-assured young kitten soon melts in your arms at the end of a day, eyes drifting as she fights sleep.

Will the kittens settle, when they leave home? Will they be alright with our existing pets?

Will I be able to cope? Will they miss their Mummy? Who can I ask if I am worried at night? How will I know if they are happy?

Purrfectly valid questions, and ones that any responsible Human is going to wonder.

Now, to reassure you:

Your Tonkinese kitten chose you to be their Slave, and have been looking forward to starting their Own Life with you, being themselves, with no Mummy or Grown-ups telling them off! This is the biggest step in their lives, and they will miss Mummy-cuddles, snuggling and groomings. Their Mother and we, trust you now to give them the gentle love and reassurance, to be there for them, and with them, to play with them and share everything with them. Your little Tonk trusts you completely, for now you are her Family for ever.

We keep in touch with our kittens' Slaves as much or as little as they like, because we are always here for the slightest worry, day or night. Wonderfully, many, many Slaves actually send us photos - hard copy as well as by email.  Here are just a few (on our old site). All of these photos were sent within days, or at most two weeks, of their taking their new kitten/s home. Look and see them, settled in their new lives, with new people to get to know, two legged and four.

How will you tell if they are happy? They will tell you, they will love you, just gaze into their eyes.

We truly care about you and your your new Tonk, you are welcome to ring us at ANY time about anything at all, and rest assured, we have done the same to our friends and mentors too!!

"If you want something, speak quietly." I'm the only one awake.

For the artistic, Tonks are living sculptures.

These active, playful beings are breathtaking even when sleeping, but awake, they take on an intangible, fluid beauty.

They choose us, not we them, they grace our homes with their presence.

They bring serenity and wisdom.

They bring mad racing games and hours of joy.

Tonks enrich every life that they touch.

They are very special.

The true Tonkinese has been born with generations of perfected skills.

Guile, charm and the ability to bring a smile to the saddest heart are their inheritance.

They will fascinate you, they will infiltrate your life.

At times, you will draw breath and wonder how it came to be, that this elegant, beautiful being selected you, but she did!
